The wide-eyed Parisian Janis began her American journey with a move to New York in 2012. The New School degree in hand, Janis found herself back in France for six months awaiting an American visa, freeing up her time to rekindle a love for a craft she had learned as a child: hand embroidery.
In 2016, an overwhelming need to revamp her wardrobe without buying new clothes led to the creation of Janis Embroidery, where she was able to “tattoo” her clothes and give them new life. After realizing its potential as a business, Janis parted ways with her career in film and television to pursue the venture.
After collaborations with many global brands such as Barneys, Saks Fifth Avenue, Barneys New York, Levi’s, Sandro, Maje, Everlane, The Frankie Shop and Agnès B, Janis decides to expand Janis Embroidery and launch a handbag line under the name Janis Studios. March 2018: The Darka Bag sees the light of day for the first time.
A year later, in 2019, upon the success of her handbag line, companies reach out to Janis to seek her expertise on image and artistic direction. It seemed only natural for the company to grow in that way. We are now proud to take back our narrative and call Janis Studios a full on creative studio where handbags, hand embroidery and creative direction go hand in hand as services and products we offer to consumers and business alike.
